Soap Making for All Ages
Are tired of doing the usual ways to let out your creative side such as paintings or drawings? Then you should try another method which is not very famous but will also be a good way to express your creativity. This hobby is soap making. It will be similar to making sculptures but it is very practical and it will really stimulate your mind as to how you will put your ideas into action.
The first thing you need to know is how to make the most basic soap. Without this, you won't have anything to design. You can choose to make your own soap using oil and lye, or you may opt to use ready-made glycerin soap which you will only melt and will be ready to be designed.
Making your own soap from scratch is better if you want to give your soap the exact properties that you want. By choosing what type of oil to use, you may alter the basic properties of soap such as its hardness, mildness or lathering capabilities. Glycerin soap on the other hand, is more limited as you will only be able to alter its color or you may opt to add special ingredients to add to its properties.
On the other hand, making your own soap is rather dangerous as you will need to handle lye. This is dangerous as lye is a very caustic substance. It can cause burns when it comes in contact with your skin. It can also irritate your lungs when you accidentally inhale the fumes. For children, it is better to use glycerin soap and avoid any accidents when making soap.
When designing your soap, start off with the more basic techniques such as adding color to your soap, or giving it shape using single or multiple molds. You may also try sculpting your soaps once it is semi-hard so that it can assume the final shape that you want once it has completely hardened.
You may try different ways of designing your soap. You may try making well known structures such as the statue of liberty in making your soap, although this would require a very high level of skill. You may also choose to do simpler designs such as animals and food items. You may also combine smaller soaps to come up with a better overall design.
As stated earlier, even children can take this up as a hobby as it is really easy yet fun to do. Glycerin soap just needs to be melted and children can already start making their designs by adding color and putting their soaps into molds. They will surely enjoy using their soaps afterwards as well. Just remember that adult supervision will be needed to prevent any accidents from happening.
Soap making is a very fun hobby that people of all ages will definitely enjoy. This is a great way to pass the time especially if you are the creative type who wants to make something with their hands. This is also very practical as you can use your soaps after you have made them, or you can also display them in your bathroom to make it look better.
